UFOs
A critical look at the evidence

## EMBARGOED UNTIL AUGUST 2010 ##

UFOs have been with us for as long as humans can remember.

In prehistoric times, humans probably drew pictures on rocks and cave walls of strange objects they saw in the sky (1). When languages became a way of life, these pictures were augmented by more verbal descriptions which included such terms as 'coloured globes', 'fiery lights', 'flying shields', and 'chariots of fire', to name a few.

In the late 1940s, the term 'flying saucers' became synonymous with a number of the more unusual sightings including those symmetrical metallic daylight disks and of the nocturnal glowing variety.

Today, we categorise them as Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) until a more suitable scientific explanation is found.

In which case, how do we explain UFOs?

The 20th century scientific view on UFOs
Dr J. W. Warwick, American space expert at the University of Colorado, USA, said:

'Popular ideas about flying saucers have no basis in scientific fact. I have often spoken to observers of flying saucers and in most cases we can explain the sightings as weather balloons, natural phenomena or bright planets seen through atmospheric turbulence.

'I am convinced all would be explained away if we had enough details of each sighting.' (2)

Professor Herman Oberth of Germany, a famous scientist who worked on rocket development with the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in the late 1950s and afterwards joined NASA at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, said:
'I have examined all the arguments supporting and denying the existence of flying saucers, and it is my conclusion that UFOs do exist, are very real and are spaceships from another or more than one other solar system. They are possibly manned by intelligent observers who are members of a race which has been conducting long-range scientific investigations of our Earth for centuries.' (3)

In 1969, the University of Colorado conducted a study on UFOs on behalf of the US government and military. Under the auspicious eyes of the study's prime research leader and nuclear physicist Dr Edward U. Condon, the Condon Report concluded by saying the study of UFOs will probably not advance science and should be ignored including the close range variety of UFOs reported by witnesses.

An example of a close range UFO
Seventy-seven-year-old Alfred Burtoo of Aldershot, England, revealed to investigators the UFO he saw land near the Basingstoke Canal, not far from the Gasworks Bridge (now called the Government Road Bridge). (4)

It began on the night of 11-12 August 1983. Mr Burtoo was fishing in the Basingstoke Canal as he often did.

Suddenly a UFO appeared. Mr Burtoo saw it land near the canal, not far from the Gasworks Bridge.

"...[I] saw a vivid light coming towards me from the south, which is over North Town." Burtoo said. "It wavered over the railway line and then came on again, then settled down. The vivid light went out, though I could see a light through the boughs of the trees."

A few minutes later, Burtoo was approached by two small humanoid beings:

"...I saw two 'forms' coming towards me, and when they were within five feet [1.5 metres] of me they just stopped and looked at me, and I at them, for a good ten or fifteen seconds. They were about four feet [1.2 metres] high, dressed in pale green coveralls from head to foot, and they had helmets of the same colour with a visor [covering their facial features] that was blacked out.

"Then the one on the right beckoned me with his right forearm and turned away, still waving its arm. I took it that he wished me to follow, which I did. He moved off and I fell behind him, and the chap that was on the left fell in behind me."

The manner in which the beings walked seemed normal to Burtoo, except that he did notice their movements were rather stiff-jointed. Their one-piece suits fitted tightly to their unusually thin bodies, and no signs of belts, zippers, buttons or fasteners could be discerned on the suits.

A short while later, Burtoo came upon what appeared to be "a large object, about 40 to 45 feet [12 to 14 metres] across". The object had portholes positioned evenly around it, and the object rested on two ski-type runners.

"...I thought, Christ, what the hell's that?" Burtoo recalled. "Didn't think about UFOs at the time."

Then Burtoo said:

"...When we got down there this 'form' in front of me went up the steps and I followed....Going in the door, the corners weren't sharp, they were rounded-off. We went into this octagonal room. The 'form' in front of me crossed over the room, and I heard a sound as if a sliding door was being opened and closed. I stood in the room to the right of the door, and the 'form' that had walked behind me stood just inside, between me and the door. I don't know whether it was to stop me going out or not....

"I stood there a good ten minutes, taking in everything I could see. The walls, the floor and the ceiling were all black, and looked to me like unfinished metal, whereas the outside looked like burnished aluminium. I did not see any sign of nuts or bolts, nor did I see any seams where the object had been put together. What did interest me most of all was a [central] shaft that rose up from the floor to the ceiling. The shaft was about four feet [1.2 metres] in circumference, and on the right-hand side of it was a Z-shaped handle. On either side of that stood two 'forms' similar to those that walked along...with me."

The level of the ceiling seemed very low to the witness. The floor appeared to have a soft covering as no sound of his footsteps could be heard. Internal lighting in the room was rather dim and did not appear to emanate from any definite source. No signs of a control panel, seats, instruments or other objects could be seen except for the central shaft with its Z-shaped handle. Suddenly Burtoo recalled hearing a voice:

"All of a sudden a voice said to me, Come and stand under the amber light. I could not see any amber light until I took a step to my right, and there it was way up on the wall just under the ceiling. I stood there for about five minutes, then a voice said, What is your age? I said 'I shall be seventy-eight next birthday'. And after a while I was asked to turn around, which I did, facing the wall. After about five minutes he said to me, You can go. You are too old and infirm for our purpose.

"I left the object, and while walking down the steps I used the handrail and found it had two joints in it, so I came to the conclusion it was telescopic. I walked along the towpath to about halfway between the object and the canal bridge, stopped, and looked back and noticed that the dome of the object looked very much like an oversized chimney cowl, and that it was revolving anticlockwise.

"I then walked on to the spot where I had left my dog and fishing tackle, and the first thing I did when I got there was to pick up my cold cup of tea and drink it. And then I heard this whining noise, just as if an electric generator was starting up, and this thing lifted off and the bright light came on again. It was so bright that I could see my fishing float in the water 6 feet away from the opposite bank of the canal, and the thin iron bars on the canal bridge. The object took off at a very high speed, out over the military cemetery in the west, and then a little later I saw the light going over the Hog's Back and out of sight. This was around 2.00am."

Burtoo rested until dawn, about 3.30am, and then "I got into what I had come out for the fishing!"

He returned home at around 1.00pm that day to mention his UFO story to his wife Marjorie and a friend of hers. Incredibly, Burtoo refrained himself from telling the part about been taken on board, thinking "the wife would say, 'No more fishing for you, old man!'".

For a short period of time, a lack of appetite and general tiredness were the only side-effects the witness experienced immediately after his encounter with the UFO.

Since his death on 31 August 1986 (from cancer), Burtoo has never retracted his statements concerning the incident. As Marjorie said:

"What Alf told you [without the use of hypnosis] was the absolute truth. My friend who was with me when Alf came home can verify what he said. He looked absolutely shaken and he told both of us about his experience that he had with the UFO. He was just like a man who had seen a miracle happen and we knew he was telling the truth because no one could believe otherwise if they had heard him and saw him that morning. My husband was not a man who believed in fantasies or had hallucinations. He was down to earth, and you can take it from me that Alf never changed his mind on the story of what he had seen and experienced."

So how do we explain this UFO example?

The new 21st century scientific view on UFOs
While some scientists might like to think such detailed cases are probably the result of overactive imaginations called hoaxes or hallucinations, an Australian researcher from SUNRISE Information Services has conducted independent scientific research into observations of unexplained UFOs at close range from around the world for more than 20 years. The work has resulted in the discovery of a previously hidden electromagnetic technology with new scientific knowledge linking gravity and light and so providing support for Einstein's Unified Field Theory.

The propulsion system is based on the emission of electromagnetic radiation from a charged surface.

Mentioned in only a few advanced university textbooks on electromagnetism, any charged object emitting radiation in one direction causes the object to recoil in the opposite direction just like the emission of hot gases and radiation from the exhaust end of a rocket.

However, what makes the charged surface particularly important is how it affects the emitted radiation. Unlike uncharged surfaces where the energy to create an emission of radiation disappears forever into space, a charged surface helps the radiation to re-exert itself back onto the charged surface many times over and so amplifying the electromagnetic force. This can be seen from the mathematical equation where physicists have interpreted the accelerating solution as a recoiling force by the emitted radiation re-exerting itself onto the charged object to create what is known as self-acceleration. Furthermore, this self-accelerating behaviour is exponential, meaning that any charged object undergoing self-acceleration will rapidly approach the speed of light.

The mathematics for self-acceleration has been proven and satisfies all the laws for the conservation of energy. All that is needed is an invention to prove self-acceleration does occur in reality.

Fortunately, the patent exists thanks to the work of Dr Thomas T. Brown. The inventor is the first physicist to have seen evidence of self-accelerating behaviour in a charged object. If this is true, it would mean the technology can be re-tested by scientists today using ordinary metals and insulating materials.

Thanks to this new testable patent, the mathematics of self-acceleration can not only be tested for its reality and so be applied in a real Star Trek-like technology, but also all UFO observations from genuine unexplained cases can now be scientifically explained.

Is there an electromagnetic technology to be found in the UFO reports?
The late Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, former head of Project Blue Book in the United States between 1952 and 1953, said after the 1957 wave of UFO reports had swept through his country:

'During my tenure with Project Blue Book we had reports of radiation and induction fields in connection with UFOs, however the information was sketchy and we were never able to pin it down....[The reports of electromagnetic disturbances characterised] a whole new dimension to the UFO investigation.' (5)

Senior radio engineer who worked for the Department of Transport in Ottawa by the name of Dr Wilbert Brockhouse Smith (1910-1962) also believed from his government-funded study into UFOs that there was a link between UFOs and electromagnetism.

Now the work has been completed and, for the first time, an Australian researcher has uncovered the secret Smith, Ruppelt and others had been looking for.

The truth is definitely in the UFO reports.
